Carey and Walter Afanasieff Wrote and produced the song and was released as the principal single from the album on October 29, 1994 by Columbia Records. The song includes bell chimes, backing vocals, and synthesizers. The track emerge in popularity each holiday season and has become a Christmas standard.

The track became a global hit, topping the charts in over 25 countries. In 2019, 25 years after its original release, it became number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for the first time. In 2020, the track also became number one on the charts in the United Kingdom for the first time. With sales of over 14 million copies worldwide, the track is the best-selling holiday song by a female singer.
