This led to the popularity of collecting rare erasers among a group of students, and young Tanaka decided to join this trend to stand out. However, instead of seeking friendship, he focused on intense competition with another student named Sato, who, thanks to his wealthy parents, could afford rare erasers.
The rivalry between Tanaka and Sato intensified as they competed to acquire the rarest erasers. While Sato had access to unusual erasers thanks to his wealthy family, Tanaka only had a rare dodo eraser, a gift from his relatives.
Tanaka’s life became even more complicated when his father gifted him a cockatiel named Maru, while his brother received an expensive gaming computer. The disparity in gifts added to his growing sense of injustice.
Things came to a head when Tanaka became obsessed with a rare Donraku Shofutei eraser listed for sale on an online auction site. In secret, he created an account on the site and used his father’s credit card to bid on the auction. However, an anonymous buyer outbid him repeatedly, pushing him to the brink. Tanaka decided to make an extreme bid of ¥100,000 (approximately $1,000), which finally allowed him to win the auction. What he initially saw as an act of rebellion against his teacher’s socialist rules had devastating consequences.
The chapter reveals how his choice to make this extreme bid not only made him an outcast at school but also fractured his relationship with his father, who, upon discovering Tanaka’s action, severely punished him. This incident taught him that he alone was responsible for the consequences of his actions.
Years later, Tanaka, now 20 years old, works at a video game company. The breaking point came when Tanaka finally won the dodo in the game. However, his victory was marred when, while trying to cross the street with his phone in hand, Odokawa narrowly avoided hitting him, causing the phone to fall into a sewer. When he retrieved his repaired phone, he discovered that his game win had not been saved, plunging Tanaka into despair.
Back at home, Tanaka faced a harsh reality: his pet cockatiel Maru had passed away, likely due to Tanaka’s negligence in not feeding the bird. While burying his beloved pet in a park, Tanaka made a shocking discovery as he found a gun apparently discarded by Dobu, a mysterious character.
The story takes a turn when we return to the present. Tanaka, in a state of confusion and rage, crosses paths with Shibagaki, who tries to console him. Shibagaki shares his own struggle to find success in Tokyo and talks about the importance of not giving up on things within one’s control.
However, Tanaka interprets Shibagaki’s words differently and comes to the conclusion that the dodo in the game is a source of bad luck. He feels that it is an unsatisfying addiction that will never bring him the happiness he seeks. On the other hand, the tangible gun he found makes him feel more alive than ever, fueling his desire to use it against those he blames for his current situation.
The chapter culminates with Tanaka recognizing Odokawa’s taxi on the road and losing his grip on sanity. Armed with Dobu’s gun, he chases after the taxi in search of revenge.
